UNE LETTRE
You may recall that the previous issue included an item on Henry Grimshaw – here’s part of a letter he sent in response (in April).
Bonjour!
We have now been in France for nineteen months. It has been very difficult coping with the language. Quite a lot of things needed doing to the house and, so far, we have engaged a plumber, an electrician, a roofer and a decorator. Daughter, Julia, and Michael have done well to cope.
Julia is quite good at painting in watercolours, although she has joined a group of ladies in the village who are at the moment using oils. One of the village ladies is helping Julia and a Canadian lady to improve their French. My progress is very slow, however.
There is a colony of British people near Bergerac, but we wanted to integrate with the French and we find them very helpful. Here there is a Canadian family, as well as Finnish and Portuguese, but we are the only English.
In June we are to stage an exhibition of our native foods: I don’t know whether ours is going to be roast beef and Yorkshire Pudding; all sorts of dishes are coming to mind.
Thank you for the large print magazine ..... with failing sight I find it much more comfortable to read than on the ‘net’. I enclose a cheque for £100 for the church collection.
I am keeping quite well and am now half way to ninety-three!
Love and good wishes to all
Henry
