AUGUST 1st is Lammas Day and was once one of the Church’s great festivals. It was known as "First Fruits Day", when summer’s bounty was offered with thanks to the church. The word Lammas is derived from Hlafmaesse – an Anglo-Saxon word meaning ‘Loafmass’ when bread was baked and given to the church which some people believe to be the origin of our Harvest Festival.
