ANDREW GREGORY

Winner ‘Press Awards’ Science and Health journalist of the year

Son of John & Ellen Gregory

On 10 March 2015, Andrew Gregory, son of two of our church members won the above award. The following is a press release, slightly modified, about Andrew’s work with the Daily Mirror newspaper.

Using his extensive network of sources, and acute insight into the NHS, Andrew Gregory stood out among his peers in 2014. His agenda-setting exclusives had his rivals constantly playing catch up.

In February, he exposed a major crisis in children’s mental health services. His investigation was based on interviews with dozens of experts and families, as well as new data uncovered using freedom of information laws.

His findings were branded "shocking" by one former Health Secretary, prompting Britain’s most senior psychiatrist to speak out for the first time publicly, and sparked a House of Commons Health Select Committee inquiry into the scandal. Andrew Gregory was the only journalist asked to submit evidence to MPs.

Grahame Morris MP, a member of the committee, said: "The Daily Mirror’s investigation and findings have been influential, and played a key part in triggering the formal inquiry."

Andrews’s work had enormous impact. Norman Lamb MP, the Mental Health Minister, was forced into performing a U-turn and admitted services were "stuck in the dark ages". The government subsequently announced it would invest an extra £100 million in children’s mental health services over the next five years.

He also produced a string of exclusive stories on NHS pay, and when Stephen Sutton’s mother decided to reveal that doctors had tragically missed her son’s cancer for six months, it was Gregory who broke the story. His scoop was followed up by print, radio and TV media outlets worldwide. His unique access to a meeting between Jane Sutton and Britain’s leading oncologists - and the resulting story - illustrates how and why he led the pack in 2014.
