GIFT ’92
|
The Guild of 1992 inspired the establishment of the
furniture recycling charity Gift92 - a practical example of ecumenical work in
action, with involvement from the Anglican, Roman Catholic and Methodist
communities. Funding initially came from Methodist Mission Alongside the Poor,
with people such as Rev.Bill Knowles and Brian Kirkham instrumental in getting
the organisation off the ground. The Methodist presence is continued today
through the involvement of Ted Lowes and Tony Greaves. From its warehouse in Boundary Road, Gift92 helps a total of around 1500 people annually to set up home – most having been granted the tenancy of a (completely empty) flat or town house. Its links with other local charities, including Preston Relief In Need and The Harris Charity, ensure ‘white goods’ such as cookers, fridges etc. are also available to those referred to us. Many of those helped are on very limited incomes. We regularly support families with young children, victims of fire and flood, people with disabilities, and ex-homeless young people who are putting together their first stable home. The charity has enjoyed public support through donated furniture, which it collects and gifts to persons who have been referred – charging only for delivery. However, Gift92 has to compete for its supply of furniture with other charities which sell furniture to provide income for their fund-raising projects. In order to recover its operational costs, the charity receives some income from Referral Agencies and from Landfill Tax Credits, in addition to its delivery charges. Gift92 has also been supported over the years by grants from Preston City Council and other charitable bodies, but it remains a constant struggle to attract sufficient funds to keep going. Many of the trustees are still drawn from local churches and the involvement of the Methodist people has been an essential and significant factor in the charity achieving this twenty year milestone, and supporting so many people. The trustees are hoping that the Guild spirit generated in 2012 will renew public support for this worthy cause at a time when requests for help are increasing due to the current economic climate. Please remember: if you live in the wider Preston area, Gift92 will collect, free of charge, re-usable items. You can ring 01772 716572 Mon.-Fri. Between 10 am & 2 pm, or visit our website for information. Peter Taylor |
