MEMORIES FROM PAT TURNER

I was born in Fulwood on 19th November, 1931, and my parents were Sydney & Ada (nee Hood) Margerison. My father was born in the house on Victoria Road which now serves as the Manse. His parents Matthew & Annie, were very much involved with the foundation of the Church and Annie officially opened one of the two front doors at the Opening Ceremony.

My mother joined the Church when a teenager, and played a full part in its life. For many years she was to sing in the choir, performing many solos. She was also a member of the Women’s Fellowship, and sang for them whilst Marjorie Butcher played the piano.

As a child I was a regular attender at Church and at Sunday School until I went off to boarding school from 1942 until 1946. I left there at the age of fifteen.

Asking to become a Sunday School teacher, I was told I must wait until I became sixteen; then I joined the Primary Department led by Hilda Porter (nee Fisher). Dorothy Fielding took us for training classes. When Hilda retired from her position, after many years service, Mary Mitchell and I took it in turns to lead the Primary Department. I also played the piano for the hymns.

I was a member of the choir under Tom Howarth. He was also a member of the Fraternal and played in the badminton team. At Christmastime we would deliver food for Christmas Dinner to poor families, and toys for the children.

On 8th July, 1954, Dick and I were married in the Church by the Reverend T. Earis and we settled into our new home in Ashton. This year we celebrated our Diamond Wedding and were fortunate enough to be able to join with you at Sunday Morning Worship on 6th July. I have lovely memories of my time at Fulwood and of the many people who were my friends.
